Hanging pleated curtains: here's how it works

Are you going to hang your new pleated curtains? There are several ways to do this, and it’s easier than you might think. How do I hang a pleated header tape curtain?

  • Step 1

    Take the pleated curtain out of the packaging. The package contains hooks, pleating tape and hemming tape to easily shorten and hang the curtain. You can choose step 2A and then you’re done, or step 2B with the hooks.

    Do you still need to shorten the curtain? Do this first, before creating the pleats and hanging the curtain. With the included hemming tape, you can easily adjust the curtain to the correct length yourself. View the step-by-step instructions for shortening your curtain here.

  • Step 2A | Pleat tape on rod

  • Step 2B | Slide the pleat hooks into the pleat tape

    Start with the first tunnel at the corner of the curtain, on the side with the HOOMstyle label. Slide the pleat hook through the tunnel in the pleat tape, then give it a small twist. This keeps the hook firmly in place so it does not slip out when you hang the curtain.

    In principle, the curtain is now ready to hang. Would you like more pleats and a fuller look? Then continue with step 3.

  • Step 3 | Gather the curtain using the pleat cords

    Optional step: Start at the top of the curtain tape, as shown in the video. Gently pull the first gathering cord, creating small gathers in the fabric. Gather approximately halfway across the curtain, then do the same from the other side.

    Then repeat this at the bottom of the curtain tape. In total, pull the gathering cord in four places: on both sides at the top, and then at the bottom.

    The gathers do not need to be perfectly distributed yet. In step 4, we show you how to distribute them evenly across the curtain.

  • Step 4 | Distribute the pleats and secure the cords

    Now distribute the gathers evenly across the width of the curtain. Gently slide them along with your hands until you’re happy with how the folds fall.

    Is everything evenly distributed? Then tie a small knot in the ends of the pleat cords so the pleats stay in place. Do this again in all four places: on both sides, at the top and bottom.

    Your curtain is now ready to hang!

  • Step 5 | Hang the curtain up

    Time to hang your curtain! Insert the pleat hooks one by one into the gliders on your curtain rail. And that’s it!

    Your pleated curtains are hanging – well done! Now all that’s left is to enjoy the end result.

How do you hang a pleated curtain?

Hanging a pinch-pleat curtain is fortunately not difficult—you just need to know how it works. You can hang a HOOMstyle pinch-pleat curtain in two ways: directly from a curtain rod or with pinch-pleat hooks on a curtain track. The method you choose also partly determines the look of your curtains.

1. Hanging a pinch-pleat curtain from a rod

This is the easiest method; see step 2A. Simply slide the curtain rod through the pockets in the pleat tape. You do not need any curtain hooks for this. It is a simple solution, but certainly no less attractive: the fabric hangs smoothly and immediately gives your window an inviting look.

Would you like the curtain to have a little more pleating? Then follow step 3. You can easily gather the fabric a little more using the four pleat cords in the pleat tape. In the video and the step-by-step guide below, we show you exactly how to pull and secure the four cords and distribute the pleats evenly across the curtain.

2. Hanging a pinch-pleat curtain with pinch-pleat hooks

Are you hanging the curtain from a curtain track? Then follow step 2B. You can use pinch-pleat hooks for this. Our pinch-pleat curtains come with single pinch-pleat hooks. Simply slide these into the pleat tape and twist them to secure them firmly in place. Then hang the hooks on the runners of your curtain track.

With this method too, you can pull the four pleat cords to gather the curtain a little more. The video shows you step by step how to do this and how to distribute the pleats evenly afterward.

Would you prefer fuller pleats? You can also choose double pinch-pleat hooks. These are available, for example, at a DIY store and can be slid through the designated pockets in the pleat tape. This creates deeper, fuller pleats and gives the curtain a look that is even more reminiscent of a made-to-measure curtain.

Good to know: 140 cm is the width of the curtain when the fabric is completely flat. As soon as you create pleats, you use part of that fabric width to form them. As a result, the curtain becomes narrower when it hangs. With a double pleat, you use more fabric for the pleats, leaving less width to cover your window.
