Shorten your curtains yourself?
Here’s how!

You can easily adjust your HOOMstyle curtains to the right length yourself. With the included iron-on hemming tape, you don't need a sewing machine: measure, cut, fold and iron. Follow the steps below to make your curtains fit your window.

Step-by-step guide to shortening curtains

  • Step 1 – Determine the correct length

    First measure the height from the curtain rail or rod to the floor. This will tell you which length you need.

    Would you like your curtains to hang neatly just above the floor? Then subtract approximately 2 cm from this measurement. This prevents the curtains from dragging on the floor and makes them easy to open and close. Exactly how high you let them end is, of course, also a matter of taste, so choose what you like best.

    You can also hang the curtain first and then measure how many centimetres need to be removed from the bottom.

  • Step 2 | Measure the correct length on the curtain

    Lay the curtain out flat and measure the desired length you determined in step 1. Mark this length with pins at several points across the width of the curtain. This will allow you to fold the hem straight in the next step.

    Do not cut the fabric yet. You will do that last.

  • Step 3 | Fold the hem

    Place the fabric with the “wrong” side, or the inside, facing up. Fold the bottom of the curtain up to the level of the pins. Make sure the hem runs neatly straight across the entire width.

    Then iron the fold in the fabric so that it remains clearly visible. Do not use the hemming tape yet—that comes in the next step. You can remove the pins now.

  • Step 4 | Place the iron-on hemming tape in the hem

    Fold the hem open slightly and place the included iron-on tape firmly in the fold, between the two layers of fabric. Make sure the tape is nicely straight.

  • Step 5 | Carefully iron the hem tape in place

    The fusible tape is now neatly between the two layers of fabric. Then carefully iron over the hem. The heat bonds the fusible tape to the fabric and secures the hem.

    Iron carefully and not too hot so that you do not damage the fabric.

  • Step 6 | Cut away the excess fabric

    Is the hemming tape firmly attached? Then neatly trim away the excess fabric from the back of the curtain. Do not cut right along the edge of the hem; leave approximately 2 cm of fabric for a neat finish.

    And you're done! Your curtain is now the correct length and ready to hang.
